Death in Istanbul
Death and its Rituals in Ottoman-Islamic Culture

Focusing on the death rituals of Ottoman-Islamic culture in the former imperial capital Istanbul, this exhibition, instead of entering the dark and mysterious realm of death, is designed to objectify it and observe it from a distance.

Photographs of tombstones, actual tombstones, reproductions of miniatures, documents related to the period's death rituals, photographs and other artifacts are regrouped under seven main headings and arranged in standard display units forming a sequence of light-dark, positive-negative spaces unique to the exhibition.

It is entirely fitting that this exhibit, housed on the second floor of a late 19th century building, should be viewed in a space, where windows overlook a street flanked by buildings of the same period.
