Post-World War II Contemporary Music and Politics

Sarper Özsan will be with us at the Voyvoda Street "Music and Politics" series this month to discuss the changing face of contemporary music after World War II and the new values that accompanied this change. Sarper will explore in detail the impact of the new world order on the post-World War II music scene and explain how contemporary music, fluctuating between the two hubs of Europe and America, fused the diverse values of the Old World with the New. The lecture titled "Contemporary Music and Politics after 1945", is scheduled for Wednesday, December 15, at 6:30 p.m.

Sarper Özsan holds a degree in composition from the Ankara State Conservatory. From 1978 to 1981 he served as representative of artistic associations on the TRT Board of Directors. He has been featured as a speaker at numerous lectures and seminars and has contributed articles to various art publications. In addition to composing the music of a number of plays and documentaries, Sarper Özsan created the original scores of several Turkish films including, Asiye Nasıl Kurtulur? and Su da Yanar. He is currently a faculty member at the Istanbul Mimar Sinan University State Conservatory.

A full program of lectures is offered by the Ottoman Bank Museum under the general heading, Voyvoda Street Lectures. Every Wednesday a lecture is presented on one of 4 main themes - music and politics, objects and rituals, economic history, and Istanbul. This season, the new series, " Music and Politics", explores the interaction of music and politics across generations. The Making of Modern Turkey Seminars, organized by the Museum in association with Boğaziçi University, are held every third Saturday of the month.
