From the Industrial Revolution to the Present: the Political, Economic and Technological Dimensions of Globalization
Prof. Gülten Kazgan will be joining us at the Voyvoda Street Economic History Lectures this month to examine the main phases of globalization and discuss their causes and consequences. In her presentation titled "From the Industrial Revolution to the Present, the Political, Economic and Technological Dimensions of Globalization" she will investigate the origins of globalization and how it has proceeded throughout history, addressing the political, economic and technological aspects of this process. The lecture will be held at the Ottoman Bank Museum, on Wednesday, December 1, at 6:30p.m. In the 200-plus years since the industrial revolution, we have witnessed, in two historical periods, the dominance of a single global power over the liberalization of goods, services and capital. The first phase of economic globalization, from the middle of the 19th century to World War I, was led by Great Britain, the instigator of the industrial revolution, and the second by the U.S., who has headed technological development from the 1980s to the present. In her lecture, Prof. Gülten Kazgan will focus on the similarities and differences between these two historical phases. Born in Istanbul, Kazgan holds a BA, MA and a Ph.D from the Faculty of Economics at Istanbul University. She studied under T.W. Schultz at the University of Chicago where she specialized in agricultural economics. Gülten Kazgan later became a full professor at Istanbul University. She is the author of several books including, İktisadi Düşünce (Economic Thought), Ortak Pazar ve Türkiye (The Common Market and Turkey), Ekonomide Dışa Açık Büyüme (Export Oriented Growth Strategy), Tanzimat'tan 21. Yüzyıla Türkiye Ekonomisi (Turkish Economy from the Tanzimat to the 21st Century), Küreselleşme ve Ulus Devlet (Globalization and the Nation-State) and of numerous articles. Prof. Gülten Kazgan is currently Founding Rector of the Board of Founders at Istanbul Bilgi University. The topic at the Voyvoda Street Economic History Lectures this season is "globalization".
