Discussing Globalization At the Voyvoda Street Lectures

Well-known for his work on globalization, the nation state, and urban sociology, Prof. Çağlar Keyder, will be joining us at the Voyvoda Street Economic History Lectures, with a presentation titled, "World-Economy, World-System and Globalization", on Wednesday, October 6, at 6:30 p.m.

Prof. Keyder believes that in the 21st century, economic, political, and cultural structures should be perceived separately, and from this perspective, he will analyze the possibilities and problems created by globalization, while examining as well the significance of the social sciences and the role they play in the world-system.

A faculty member of the Sociology department at Boğaziçi University, Çağlar Keyder also teaches sociology at the State University of New York at Binghamton. His research interests focus on Ottoman history and sociology, development, rural change, rural-urban migration and urban sociology. Keyder's book, Memalik-i Osmaniye'den Avrupa Birliği' ne (From Ottoman Empire to European Union) is a collection of all his articles on Turkey, covering the progression from the fall of the Ottoman Empire to Turkey's EU candidature. Other works by Keyder include, Ulusal Kalkınmacılığın İflası (The Failure of National Developmentalism), Türkiye'de Devlet ve Sınıflar (State and Class in Turkey), and İstanbul-Küresel ile Yerel Arasında (Istanbul: Between the Global and the Local).
