Architecture Workshop at the Ottoman Bank Museum
Social Change in the Galata-Pera district through annuals and maps (1910 to 1922)

The Ottoman Bank Museum is organizing a workshop to investigate the changes in the professional, social, ethnic and sectoral profile of the Galata-Pera district and study the professional topography of the commercial center of Istanbul through original street-scale maps. Assoc. Prof. Murat Güvenç, from the Department of City and Regional Planning at Middle East Technical University, will be joining us with a presentation titled, "Social Change in Galata-Pera and the Commercial Center of Istanbul through Annuals and Maps (1910-1920)", on Wednesday, July 7, 2004, at 5:00 p.m.

During the workshop, Güvenç will examine - within a general political context - the differentiation of the spatial profile of the area, the impact, on its structure, of changes in the relationship between workspace and residential space, and the social and spatial consequences of the process of modernization. The study, conducted by Murat Güvenç, is based on the data compiled from his TÜBİTAK (Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey) funded project, "Changes in the Social Landscape of Galata and Pera: An Analysis of the 1910-1920 Editions of the Annuaire Oriental (Oriental Annual)". The first findings, obtained during the assembling of the project database, were presented at a conference held by the Museum, last year.

After graduating from the Department of City and Regional Planning at Middle East Technical University in 1976, Murat Güvenç continued his graduate studies in Belgium and obtained his master's degree again from the Department of City and Regional Planning at METU in 1979. He then started working as a research assistant in the same department and completed his Ph.D in 1992. In 1993, Güvenç received the Middle East Technical University, Prof. M. Parlar Foundation, Thesis Award for his paper titled "Introduction to Structural Landscape Analysis: A General Survey of Istanbul's Industrial Landscapes".
