In May, at the Voyvoda Street Lectures
Yavuz Selim Karakışla Discusses Women Soldiers in the Ottoman Army

Yavuz Selim Karakışla, faculty member of the Department of History at Boğaziçi University, will give a lecture titled: "Women Soldiers in the Ottoman Army: the First Battalion of Women Workers (1917-1919)", on Wednesday, May 14, at 6:30 p.m.

When the Ottoman Empire entered World War I with three million soldiers, it left behind countless women on their own and face to face with deprivation. In his lecture, Karakışla will focus on the First Battalion of Women Workers - main project of the "Islamic Society to Promote Work for Women", founded, at the time, by the Minister of War, Enver Pasha.
