At The Ottoman Bank Museum: A Tribute to Çelik Gülersoy
"Istanbul, to me, is my childhood. It is there I seek shelter as the city around me changes." (Çelik Gülersoy)

In remembrance of Çelik Gülersoy, who passed away last July, the Ottoman Bank Museum is organizing a panel discussion, moderated by Faruk Pekin, and with the participation of Prof. İlber Ortaylı and Deniz Yalav - member of the Çelik Gülersoy Foundation Board in charge of the Library - to present the Istanbul Library founded by Gülersoy. The panel discussion, which will feature as a special event in the Istanbul Lectures series the Museum is initiating in October, is scheduled for Wednesday, September 24, at 6:30 p.m.

Çelik Gülersoy restored a number of historic structures in Istanbul, redefining them as vibrant components of the city's texture. These restoration and environment preservation projects also supplied the material for his numerous books and contributed significantly to the writing of Istanbul's history. While providing an analytical framework to the human, spatial and literary dimensions of the city, his works also offer a great deal of documentary evidence on the topic.

Istanbul Library: It is a library and an archive reassembling all written works concerning Istanbul, as well as all engravings, drawings and photographs depicting the city all through the ages. Istanbul, the historic capital of three empires, was, throughout history, a focus of interest and admiration all over the world. Countless oeuvres were published about the city, although for social and cultural reasons, these works were never circulated in Istanbul itself. To make up for this great deficiency, the center was created through the initiative of Çelik Gülersoy, who also donated to the Library his large private collection of publications regarding Istanbul, that span the last 400 years. The Library is situated behind Hagia Sophia, on Soğukçeşme Street, one of the historic areas in Istanbul whose integrity and "spirit" has been preserved intact.
