At the Ottoman Bank Museum:
Architect Nevzat Sayın presents "Apel Gallery"

Architect Nevzat Sayın will be with us at the Voyvoda Street Architecture Talks, on Wednesday, January 14, at 6:30 p.m., to present Apel Gallery, one of his favorite places in Istanbul. The art gallery, that first began its activities in 1998 with the exhibition Damak (Taste), is located in the Apel apartment building built for the Apelyan family at the end of the 19th century. Nevzat Sayın created the architectural design of the gallery, while Sermet Elçi was the project architect. Sayın is a graduate of the Department of Architecture, from the School of Fine Arts, at Eskişehir University. He has won several awards as a practicing architect and served on the jury for numerous projects.

"The street running along the magnificent wall at the back of the Galatasaray High School is more like a sqare than a street," says Sayın, describing the site of Apel gallery. "The wall curves so that the street seems bigger and wider than it really is. The Apel building, is situated right in the center of the narrow part of the sqare. We were supposed to convert the two lower floors - the basement floor, where a carpenter ran a small business, and the rather neglected apartment on the floor above - into an art gallery. Frankly, I've forgotten the people living in that apartment, but I still remember Armenak, the carpenter."
