Our Speaker at the Voyvoda Street Lectures in April
Historian Tülay Artan
Assoc. Prof. Tülay Artan, from the School of Arts and Social Sciences at the Sabancı University, will give a lecture titled: "Was Edirne the Capital of the Ottoman Empire in the Second Half of the 17th century?" on Wednesday, April 16, at 6:30 p.m.
Edirne, the second Ottoman capital after Bursa, was replaced by Istanbul, the third and last capital of the Empire, after the conquest of Constantinople in 1453. Looking at the various festivities and military and religious ceremonies held in Edirne under the rule of the four Sultans who, over a span of 46 years, spent most of their reign there, Tülay Artan will discuss the status of Edirne, with respect to Istanbul, the actual capital at the time. In the light of Abdurrahman Abdi Pasha's Chronicle of Events ("Vekayinâme") and Ahmed Bin Mehmed's Book of Protocol ("Teşrifat Defteri"), Artan will investigate whether Edirne did in fact assume the functions of a capital in the second half of the 17th century.
