THE OTTOMAN BANK MUSEUM Calendar of Events April - June 2004 VOYVODA STREET LECTURES A. ECONOMİC HİSTORY LECTURES First Wednesday of each month 6:30-8:00 p.m The theme, this year, for this lecture series ongoing since 2000, is Finance, Investments and Commerce in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey. VIEWS ON POVERTY IN THE REPUBLICAN ERA In countries where industrialization started early, the problem of poverty came to constitute the beginning of the process of modern social policies. In such countries, aid to the poor appeared as the first instance of those policies. Social assistance programs and social insurance institutions designed to provide medical insurance and unemployment or old-age insurance for the working population followed later. Prof. Ayşe Buğra / April 7, 2004 / 6:30-8:30 p.m. PRIVATE PROPERTY AND LAW IN THE 19TH CENTURY MODERN OTTOMAN STATE The appearance of property rights on land, as the major institution of market economy during the 19th century, is a fact that cannot be dissociated from the process of the formation of the modern state and from the reorganization undertaken by the state for financial purposes. For this reason, 19th century Ottoman history is better viewed as the history of a country experiencing growing pains rather than - as it has so often been suggested - an account of the Sick Man of Europe's attempts to win over the approval of the West. Moreover, it is a history the Ottoman state has in common, with other countries at different times all around the world... Prof. Huricihan İslamoğlu / May 5, 2004 / 6:30-8:30 p.m. TURKISH ECONOMY DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION (1930-1933) The Great Depression, which struck hard at capitalist countries in the beginning of the 1930s, left Turkey relatively unscathed. In the industrialized West, both economic output and prices plummeted while unemployment rose to unprecedented heights. In his lecture, Prof. Seyfettin Gürsel will examine to what extent the economic mechanisms and processes which triggered the slump in the Western world existed in Turkey, and will give us a macro-economists's analysis of Turkish economy during the depression years. Prof. Seyfettin Gürsel / June 2, 2004 / 6:30-8:30 p.m. B. ARCHITECTURE TALKS Second Wednesday of each month 6:30-8:30 p.m. The Architecture Talks, initiated last year on the topic "Galata and Pera 1900/2000," continue to focus on the architectural and social fabric of the historic Galata district. CONTEMPORARY INTERIOR DESIGN IN 19TH CENTURY STRUCTURES Integrating the technology and fixtures of modern living into the interior design of Istanbul's historic 19th century buildings. Ali Doruk / April 14, 2004 / 6:30-8:30 p.m. SOME OBSERVATIONS ON THE PASSAGE FROM MANSIONS TO APARTMENTS (REPEATED UPON GENERAL REQUEST) Starting from the second half of the 19th century, first in the Galata district and later in Pera- Beyoğlu, mansions which had formerly belonged to single families were replaced by apartments. Who were these apartments' first owners? Were they meant for their owners' personal use or to sell or rent out? Who first lived in them? Prof. Stefanos Yerasimos / May 12, 2004 / 6:30-8:30 p.m. C. CITY TOURS Third Wednesday of each month 6:30-8:30 p.m. The City Tours series, organized in collaboration with the Foundation for the Development of Cultural Awareness, offers a retrospective of cities where Ottoman Bank branches were once located. DAMASCUS Founded in the third millennium B.C., Damascus is still considered by many the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world. Due both to its strategic location on the main caravan route from Anatolia to Arabia and Egypt, and the geopolitical position of Syria, the struggle for the sovereignty of Damascus was, in every period, a subject of dispute between the states in those regions. Baha Tanman / April 21, 2004 / 6:30-8:30 p.m. D. ISTANBUL LECTURES Fourth Wednesday of each month 6:30-8:30 p.m. The series explores diverse aspects of the metropolis and addresses issues of urban sociology. ISTANBUL AND THE ORIENTALISTS With the growing appeal of the East for 19th century Europe, Istanbul became the undisputed center of attention of Western artists and painters who discovered there an entire new field of inspiration. Prof. Zeynep İnankur / April 28, 2004 / 6:30-8:30 p.m. THE GASTRONOMICAL CULTURE OF ISTANBUL: WHAT IS LOST AND WHAT REMAINS A look at the changes brought about in the eating and drinking habits of Istanbul residents over recent years. Assist. Prof. Zafer Yenal / May 26, 2004 / 6:30-8:30 p.m. LISTENING TO THE WORLD FROM ISTANBUL Artists instinctively question the historical and social framework of the society they live and work in. Even in an abstract sense, polyphonic music is the most accurate witness to its time, and for a musician, it is the key to experiencing the world. Cem Mansur /June 23, 2004 / 6:30-8:30 p.m. THE MAKING OF MODERN TURKEY SEMINARS Third Saturday of each month 2:00-5:00 p.m. The transition from empire to nation-state, and the legal, individual and economic variables of this process. The seminars are organized in association with Boğaziçi University on the topic "Continuity and Disruption in the Republic". CONTINUITY AND DISRUPTION IN THE REPUBLIC Dr. Ahmet Kuyaş / April 17, 2004 / 2:30 - 5:00 p.m. Prof. Mete Tuncay / May 15, 2004 / 2:30 - 5:00 p.m. Assist. Prof. Asım Karaömerlioğlu / June 19, 2004 / 2:30 - 5:00 p.m. FILMS AT THE OTTOMAN BANK MUSEUM Wednesdays and Fridays 7:30 p.m., Saturdays 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. The Ottoman Bank Museum film program is prepared in collaboration with TÜRSAK (the Turkish Cinema and Audiovisual Cultural Foundation). Films on a different theme are selected every month and complemented by a discussion on that month's theme. The Museum's movie theater has a seating capacity of 46. Screenings are at 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and at 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Tickets cost: 6 million TL full, and 4 million TL discounted and can be obtained at the Museum. APRIL: LOVE IN THE ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE... Showing at the Ottoman Bank Museum movie theater this month: 4 award-winning films with brilliant performances from all-star casts. Moving tales of lost love in the lush countryside of 19th century England, and romance on stately estates... Terrific adaptations of classic Edwardian novels - (and a more recent Booker Prize winner) - by some of the world's best contemporary filmmakers.
MAY: THE BEAUTY AND TRAGEDY OF YOUTH... The cinema is the world's youngest art form and young adults and teenagers make up the great majority of audiences around the world. It is therefore not surprising that the film industry should cater to the young and that so many classic and cult movies revolve around youth and its issues. In May, the focus is on coming-of age stories, teen rebels and the pangs of first love. 3 days will also be dedicated to children's films.
JUNE: WHERE IS CIVILIZATION TAKING US?... Environmental issues make up the common theme of the 4 films showing at the Ottoman Bank Museum movie theater throughout the month of June. All 4 are controversial films that won various awards at the time of their initial release and provide in-depth exploration of the many-sided aspects to conservation issues.
