Speaking at the Voyvoda Street Lectures in March
Historian Prof. Edhem Eldem

Historian, Edhem Eldem, curator of the Ottoman Bank Museum and Professor of History at Boğaziçi University, will give a lecture titled: "When the Palace becomes a Prison: Sultan Murad V and his Family in the Çırağan Palace" on Wednesday, March 19, at 6.30 p.m.

Murad V came to the throne when Sultan Abdülaziz was deposed in 1876 but, soon after, he was declared unable to rule on grounds of mental incapacity and confined in the Çırağan Palace where he remained until his death. Drawing on the memoirs, diaries and personal papers of Şehzade (prince) Salahaddin Efendi, the son of Murad V, Eldem will examine the life of the deposed sultan and his family, during their years of imprisonment in the Çırağan palace.
