Istanbul Coffee Houses: A means of mass communication in Ottoman society

At the Voyvoda Street Istanbul Lectures this month, Assist. Prof. Cengiz Kırlı, faculty member of the Atatürk Institute for Modern Turkish History at Boğaziçi University, delivers a lecture on "19th Century Istanbul Coffee Houses", on Wednesday, March 24, at 6:30 p.m. Kırlı will explain how, in Ottoman society, at a time before modern means of mass communication and information existed, coffee houses opened a space for public discourse and became centers of debate, where people could gather to exchange views on matters of importance to their everyday lives, and discuss issues of political concern.

Kırlı will stress the social purpose served by Ottoman coffee houses as sites for news exchange and information, and examine the attempts of the Ottoman state to control the so-called "political conversations" going on there. Drawing on coffee house conversations recorded by mid-19th century investigators, Kırlı will consider the concerns and complaints expressed by Istanbul residents, 150 years ago.
