At the Ottoman Bank Museum: From Mansion to Apartment Building...
At the Voyvoda Street Architecture Talks this month, architect and historian Prof. Stefanos Yerasimos presents, "Some Observations on the Transition from Mansions to Apartments", on Wednesday, March 10, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.
In his lecture, Yerasimos will discuss how, starting from the second half of the 19th century, first in the Galata district and later in Pera-Beyoğlu, mansions, which had formerly belonged to single families, were gradually replaced by apartment buildings. He will address issues concerning, who these apartments' first owners were, whether they were meant for the owners' personal use or to sell or rent out, and who first actually lived in them.
