At the Ottoman Bank Museum in April: 5 Lectures and 4 Films

This April, the Ottoman Bank Museum offers talks and lectures in all its current series, and hosts another Making of Modern Turkey seminar.

On Wednesday, April 7 at 6:30 p.m., Prof. Ayşe Buğra will be with us at the Economic History Lectures to discuss "Views on Poverty in the Republican Era". At the Architecture Talks, scheduled for April 14, Ali Doruk examines the interior design of 19th century structures. Prof. Baha Tanman takes us on a quick tour to Damascus on April 21, and Prof. Zeynep İnankur presents "Istanbul and the Orientalists" at the Istanbul Lectures on April 28. Finally, Assoc. Prof. Aykut Kansu will be our guest speaker at the Making of Modern Turkey seminar held on Saturday, April 17, at 2:30 p.m.

As for film aficionados, the theme of the month is "Love in the English Countryside...", featuring Howards End, Merchant and Ivory's dazzling adaptation of E.M. Forster's classic novel, The Remains of the Day, another Merchant Ivory multiple award-winning film based on Kazuo Ishiguro's nostalgic and moving story (winner of the 1989 Booker Prize), Sense and Sensibility, brilliantly adapted by director Ang Lee from the well-known Jane Austen book, and The Go-Between, Joseph Losey's version of L.P. Hartley's novel on lost love and innocence.

The Museum's movie theater, open to the public since January 2, 2004, has a seating capacity of 46. The film program is prepared in collaboration with TÜRSAK (the Turkish Cinema and Audiovisual Cultural Foundation). Screenings are at 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and at 2:30 and 6.30 p.m. on Saturdays. Tickets cost: 6,000,000 TL full, 4,000,000 TL discounted and are available at the Museum.
