The Historical Urban Landscape of Galata and Pera in 1910
This month, at the Voyvoda Street Architecture Talks, Assoc. Prof. Murat Güvenç, from the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the School of Architecture of Middle East Technical University, will be speaking on the topic "Galata and Pera 1910", on Wednesday, November 12, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. On the basis of insurance maps drawn between 1904 and 1906, Güvenç will present facts and data - fascinating to anyone interested in the urban and architectural history of the city - regarding the distinctive urban, social and economic landscape of Istanbul in 1910. Güvenç will point out that, in the beginning of the 1920s, Istanbul had reached a level of modernization in its everyday life equivalent to that of contemporary metropolises, but he will also stress that there has been no research done on the impact of this considerable modernization process, on the city's social and economic landscape. Assoc. Prof. Güvenç received the Middle East Technical University, Prof. M. Parlar Foundation, Thesis Award for his paper titled "Introduction to Structural Landscape Solutions: A General Survey of Istanbul's Industrial Landscapes".
