In Karaköy, a New Meeting Place for Cinema Buffs:
The Ottoman Bank Museum Movie Theater Since it first opened to the public a year ago, the Ottoman Bank Museum has actively contributed to the cultural landscape of Banks Street, both with the Voyvoda Street Lectures series it regularly hosts and its current caricatures exhibition, Plenty of Fantasy No Money. Now, starting from January 2, 2004, the Museum is acquiring a movie theater with a seating capacity of 46, where popular films from the history of cinema such as, Dead Poets Society, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Where the Green Ants Dream, will be shown. The Museum's film program was prepared in collaboration with TÜRSAK (the Turkish Cinema and Audiovisual Cultural Foundation). Screenings will be followed by discussions on that month's theme or on a selected film. Films will be shown at 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays and at 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Tickets, which will be available from the Museum, will sell at; full: 6,000,000 T.L. and discounted: 4,000,000 T.L. The Voyvoda Street Lectures in January The Voyvoda Street Lectures, organized around the City Tours, Architecture Talks, Economic History Lectures and Istanbul Lectures, continue to bring lecturers and museum-goers together for exciting exchanges. Among our speakers for January, Nevzat Sayın, presents Apel Gallery, Prof. Şevket Pamuk discusses the longevity of the Ottoman Empire, Yıldırım Büktel will take us on a tour of Aleppo, Tahsin İşbiroğlu looks at 19th century Istanbul postcards, and Prof. Zafer Toprak is our speaker at The Making of Modern Turkey Seminars. The lectures are scheduled every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and on the third Saturday of each month from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. The Exhibition "Plenty of Fantasy No Money" Continues The exhibition Plenty of Fantasy No Money - Caricatures of an Economy in Debt (1874- 1954) which humorously chronicles the 80 year period, starting just before the 1876 Constitution, up to 1954, when the last installment of the Ottoman debt was settled, has had 1,300 visitors up to today and will continue to be viewed at the Museum through February 15. The companion book containing close to 200 caricatures, can be obtained from the museum at a 25% discount on the 25,000,000 T.L. bookstore retail price. ![]() |
