This month at the Voyvoda Street Istanbul Lectures
How did Tourism begin in Istanbul?

Prof. Zafer Toprak, Director of the Atatürk Institute for Modern Turkish History at Boğaziçi University, will be giving a lecture on "The Emergence of Tourism in Istanbul", on Wednesday, December 24, 2003 at 6:30 p.m.

Prof. Toprak will explain how, following the Crimean War, Istanbul entered an early globalization process and became - especially in its Galata-Pera district and the Cadde-i Kebir or "Grande Rue de Pera"( today known as Beyoğlu/ İstiklâl Caddesi) - one of the world's most cosmopolitan areas.

Zafer Toprak, a professor of history, after obtaining his B.A. from Ankara University, earned his M.A. at the University of London and his Ph.D at Istanbul University. He has a number of books and articles published both in economics and history.
