The Wealth Tax in Turkey, (1942- 43)

Prof. Ayhan Aktar, from the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Marmara University, will be with us at the Economic History Lectures, on Wednesday, December 3, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., to discuss "The Wealth Tax in Turkey, (1942-43)".

Prof. Aktar stresses that the so called Wealth Tax (Varlik Vergisi) imposed at the time of the Second World War, was no ordinary tax. "The Wealth Tax is a crucial link in the chain of Turkification policies which were initiated during the last years of Ottoman rule and gradually became state policy" he says. "The Wealth Tax carries major significance not only economically but culturally and politically as well."
