Financial Reform under 19th century Ottoman Rule
The Ottoman Bank Museum, opened its 2003-2004 season this October, and will feature Prof. Tevfik Güran, on Wednesday, November 5, at 6:30 p.m., at the Economic History Lectures, ongoing since 2000.
Prof. Güran, chair of the department of Economic History, at the Istanbul University School of Economics, will give a lecture on "19th Century Ottoman Public Finance", examining the consequences that 19th century reforms had on Ottoman finance. Güran emphasizes that, it was an exceptionally significant period in the history of Ottoman finance - although insufficiant research has as yet been conducted in this area of Ottoman history- and that the reforms initiated by the Tanzimat administration and later continued in the Hamidian and Young Turks periods, established the basis for the foundation of a modern financial system.
