The "Istanbul Lectures" Begin at Voyvoda Street:
"Family Life in Istanbul"

This October, the Ottoman Bank Museum adds another area of interest to its current lectures and talks progam on economic, urban and architectural history, and introduces a new series, the "Istanbul Lectures". Prof. Alan Duben, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at Bilgi University, will deliver the first lecture of the series, "Family Life in Istanbul" on Wednesday, October 22, at 6:30 p.m.

Duben will examine everyday family life in Istanbul, and more specifically investigate whether a shift from extended family to nuclear family accompanied the transition from empire to republic. He will discuss what it means to be an Istanbul resident, whether family life in Istanbul differs from family life in Anatolia, and whether a distinctive Istanbul family can really be said to exist. Other topics to be addressed include how research in family history is conducted in the West, what has been achieved in this field in Turkey and the benefits to be gained from a better knowledge of Istanbul family life and history.
