Damascus, Past and Present, at the Ottoman Bank Museum Our second stop in the Voyvoda Street City Tours - a series realized in collaboration with the Foundation for the Development of Cultural Awareness - is Damascus, renowned as the cradle of many great civilizations from the Arameans, Phoenicians and Greeks, to Ancient Rome, Byzantium and the Ottoman Turks. Archeologist, Dr. Gül Pulhan, who specializes in Mesopotamia, will give her presentation, on Wednesday, June 18, 2003.

Pulhan, will take you on a personal tour of Damascus, where you'll visit the archeological museum and stroll through the old souk (bazaar). After sipping your cardamom flavored coffee in Sultan Abdülhamid II's private railcar, you'll wander down narrow streets flanked by antiques shops, jewelry stores and spice sellers, and hear the call to prayer from the famous Umayyad Mosque, in a world where Rome meets Christianity, and Byzantium converges with Islam.
