At the Ottoman Bank Museum
Forgotten Architects of Galata
The Voyvoda Street Istanbul Lectures, which have focused this season on the architectural history of the city, will be hosting a talk by architect Hasan Kuruyazıcı on the Forgotten Architects of Galata. The lecture will be held at the Museum, free of charge, on -Wednesday December 14, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
According to Hasan Kuruyazıcı, Istanbul witnessed a construction boom at the turn of the 20th century. Most of the apartment houses and commercial buildings built at the time are still around today but very few of us know the names of the architects who designed them. In an ongoing research project initiated more than ten years ago, Kuruyazici has brought to light again the majority of these 850 forgotten architects and has identified over 60 of the structures they built. In his lecture, he will introduce the architects (Greek, Armenian, Jewish, Muslim, Levantine and foreign) of buildings in Galata and its vicinity.
