At the Ottoman Bank Museum
THE PROBLEMATIQUE OF TRANSITION FROM SINGLE TO MULTI-PARTY SYSTEM

This month at the Making of Modern Turkey Seminars, Prof. Zafer Toprak from the Department of Economics at Boğaziçi University will be joining us with a presentation on "The Problematique of Transition from a Single- to a Multi-Party System," in which he will address this process of transition and consider as well the internal and external factors shaping that period. The lecture will be held at the Ottoman Bank Museum on Saturday, May 28, from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m.

In Prof. Zafer Toprak's words: "Between 1939 and 1947, Turkey experienced some very radical political transformations. Contrary to many European nations, this period, although characterized by an intense intermingling of domestic and foreign policy, was overall rather peaceful. Nevertheless, it also brought about the birth of totally new structures, from the economy to politics, and from culture to society. The process of adaptation to these new structures coincided with major changes in the demographic profile of the country. From the 1950s on, rural migration and rapid urbanization, combined with the absence of a well established urban culture was a major setback to the development of democracy in Turkey. The fate of the Democrat Party was sealed by demography."

Prof. Zafer Toprak was born in 1946. After graduating in 1969 from the Department of International Relations in the Faculty of Social Sciences at Ankara University, he completed a master's degree in economic history at the University of London, in 1971.

He then obtained his Ph.D. from the Faculty of Economics at Istanbul University, in 1981. Toprak currently teaches economic and social history in late Ottoman and contemporary Turkey, at Boğaziçi University. Toprak, who is founding chair and director of the Atatürk Institute for Modern Turkish History at Boğaziçi University, has published a number of books and more than 150 articles, in Turkish, English, French and German, on the economic, social and cultural histories of the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish Republic.
