Galata Lectures at the Ottoman Bank Museum
The Rise and Fall of a Pera Architecture The series of lectures on Galata and Pera, delivered by recognized academics in conjunction with the exhibition, Galata through the Ages - on view at the Ottoman Bank Museum through August 26 - comes to a close with the presentation of Prof. Uğur Tanyeli from Yıldız Technical University, on Wednesday, July 6, at 6:30 p.m. In his lecture entitled, "The Rise and Fall of a Pera Architecture," Tanyeli examines the transformation of a specific Pera architecture and the cultural change experienced within the context of the modernization of the Eastern Mediterranean. Addressing the emergence of a Pera architecture, which, from the 1820s up to the 1930s, began to develop separately from the local architectural tradition of Istanbul, Uğur Tanyeli will focus on cultural change as a vital imperative for modernization not only in Istanbul, but in the entire Eastern Mediterranean region. The exhibition, Galata through the Ages, aims to draw the attention of visitors to this historic district which played a crucial role in the transformation Istanbul began to undergo in the 19th century. Although it symbolized, for many decades, the commercial and cultural life of the city, Galata has, today, become somewhat marginalized and is on the brink of being forgotten.
