Galata Lectures at the Ottoman Bank Museum:
"Galata, the Great Customs Gate of Turkey"" Galata and Pera are examined by recognized academics, in a series of lectures related to the recent exhibition, Galata through the Ages, which will remain on view at the Otoman Bank Museum through August 26. Prof. Murat Belge, from Istanbul Bilgi University, will be joining us on Wednesday, June 22, at 6:30 p.m. with a presentation titled, "Galata, the Great Customs Gate of Turkey." In his lecture, Prof. Belge examines both local and foreign aspects of Galata along a historical axis, and from the pespective of its relations with Europe. In the 19th century, Galata, which had represented Europe since the time of the Genoese Colony, experienced a cultural transformation due to the increase in imported goods. The Galata Lectures will continue with Stefanos Yerasimos' " From Genoese to Levantine: Outline of an Evolution," on June 29, and with Uğur Tanyeli's "The Rise and Fall of a Pera Architecture," on July 6. For further information on this free lecture series offered by the Museum, please call (212) 334 22 70 The exhibition, Galata through the Ages, aims to draw the attention of visitors to this historic distric which played a crucial role in the transformation Istanbul began to undergo in the 19th century. Although it symbolized, for many decades, the commercial and cultural life of the city, Galata, today, has become somewhat marginalized and is on the brink of being forgotten.
