Galata Lectures at the Ottoman Bank Museum
"Some Reflections on Maps of Beyoğlu and Galata" The Ottoman Bank Museum is organizing a series of lectures by recognized academics in conjunction with the special exhibition, Galata through the Ages, which opened on April 26. The first of these lectures, which examine Galata and Pera from both an architectural and historical pespective, is the presentation of Prof. Nur Akın, scheduled for Wednesday, June 15, at 6:30 p.m. Prof. Nur Akın, from the Department of Restoration in the School of Architecture at Istanbul Technical University, will address the evolution of Galata and Pera through engravings, photographs and maps of the region at different periods. The series, Galata Lectures, will continue with Murat Belge's presentation, "Galata, the Great Customs Gate of Turkey," on Wednesday, June 22. Our other guest speakers are Stefan Yerasimos, on June 29, and Uğur Tanyeli, on July 6. Galata through the Ages will remain on view through August 26. The exhibition aims to draw the attention of visitors to this district of Istanbul, which played a crucial role in the transformation the city began to undergo in the 19th century. Although it was for long decades a symbol of the commercial and cultural life of Istanbul, Galata has, today, become somewehat marginalized and on the verge of being forgotten.
