Galata and Pera in the Press in the Second Half of the 19th Century
Prof. Nur Akın, from the Department of Architecture, at the Istanbul Technical University, will be speaking at the Voyvoda Street Architecture Talks, on Wednesday, June 4, at 6:30 p.m. Akin will discuss the public face of Galata and Pera in the second half of the 19th century, basing her presentation on articles that appeared in the press from 1848 to 1900.
Drawing on the local newspapers of the time, and more specifically those printed in French, Prof. Nur Akın will look at the changing social structures, life-styles, cultural tendencies and recreational activity choices of Galata and Pera, from the second half of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century.
The Architecture Talks series, organized by the Voyvoda Street Lectures, will be held all through the year, at the Ottoman Bank Museum, featuring the lectures of selected scholars and architects on the topic "Galata and Pera 1900-2000". At the end of the series, a workshop will be created to bring lecturers and students together for further discussion.
