SOME KNOWN AND UNKNOWN FACTS ABOUT THE FREE REPUBLICAN PARTY
This month, at the Making of Modern Turkey Seminars, political scientist, Assist. Prof. Cemil Koçak will be joining us with a presentation on the Free Republican Party, based on the research he has been conducting in the Prime Ministry Archives of the Republican period. The seminar will be held at the Ottoman Bank Museum on Saturday, February 19, from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m.
Koçak, who has been extensively investigating the wealth of documents in the Prime Ministry Archives relating to the major and opposition parties during the period of the Free Republican Party, will examine, in his lecture, to what extent written facts and oral history concerning the party coincide.
Born in 1956, in Izmir where he finished high school, Cemil Koçak graduated in 1978 from the Press and Media School of the Faculty of Political Science where he went on to pursue his graduate studies. After obtaining a Ph.D. in Public Administration and Political Science, he was made Assist. Prof. in Political and Social Sciences in 1991.
Koçak is the author of numerous articles and book reviews that have been published in various magazines including Tarih ve Toplum and Toplumsal Tarih. His work, Abdülhamid'in Mirası (1990) won him the Sedat Simavi Foundation Award for Social Sciences. Cemil Koçak also edited Samet Ağaoğlu's journal on the foundation of the Democrat Party, Siyasi Günlük (Demokrat Parti'nin Kuruluşu) and Haldun Derin's memoirs, "Çankaya Özel Kalemini Anımsarken (1933-1951)". Since 1984, he has been a researcher at the Turkish Center for Scientific and Technical Research (TÜBİTAK) and conducts research on contemporary political history.
