Istanbul Lectures at the Ottoman Bank Museum
Once Upon a Time Bakırköy

The Hebdomon of Byzantium, also known as Makri Khora or Makro Khori...
Today, Turkey's largest district, Bakırköy.

Researcher and writer Turgay Tuna will be joining us at the Voyvoda Street Istanbul Lectures this month with a presentation titled, "Once Upon a Time Bakırköy". The Istanbul Lectures aim to provide us with a fresh look at the city we've lived in for years but perhaps still know too little about. The lecture will be held at the Museum on Wednesday, February 9, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Well-known for his books, Bir Zamanlar Bakırköy ("Once Upon a Time Bakırköy") and Hebdomon'dan Bakırköy'e ("From Hebdomon to Bakırköy"), Turgay Tuna takes us on a stroll through old Bakırköy to discover its rich heritage of historic palaces, mansions and churches.

Researcher and writer Turgay Tuna was born in 1951, in Bakırköy, where he grew up. His research on the history of Bakırköy has been published in a number of magazines and newspapers. He is the author of Bir Zamanlar Bakırköy ("Once Upon a Time Bakırköy"), published in 1996 by İletişim Press which he followed up, in 2000, with Hebdomon'dan Bakırköy'e ("From Hebdomon to Bakırköy") published by the Municipality of Bakırköy. In 2002, Tuna launched his first "nostalgia" themed exhibition, in conjunction with and under the same name as his book, Aya Stefanosdan Yeşilköy'e ("From Ayastefanos to Yeşilköy"). This was followed, in 2003, by the exhibition İşgal Döneminde Bakırköy ("Bakırköy Under Occupation").
