The Significance of the Local Factor in Economic Development

Prof. Erol Katırcıoğlu is our guest speaker at the Voyvoda Street Political Economy Lectures this month with a presentation entitled "The Significance of the Local Factor in Economic Development," in which he discusses new approaches to the process of economic development. The lecture will be held on Wednesday, March 7, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. 

"A well-established effect of globalization is that nation states can currently rely less on traditional means in their efforts to drive economic development," says Katırcıoğlu. "This, naturally, is steering them toward different approaches. One of the most noteworthy among these brings a new understanding to the process of development by redefining efforts toward growth within a local and participatory framework."

Held on the first Wednesday of each month, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., the Voyoda Street Political Economy Lectures address the theme "Preparing Turkey for the New World Order."

Prof. Erol Katırcıoğlu Born on January 19, 1951, in Istanbul, Katırcıoğlu graduated from the Istanbul Academy of Economic and Commercial Sciences in 1975. After completing his Ph.D. at Marmara University in 1985, he was appointed assistant professor in the Department of Economics at that university between 1987 and 1990, and in 1990, was promoted to associate professor in the same department. From November 1991 to November 1993, he served as economic consultant to Prof. Erdal İnönü, who was deputy prime minister at the time, and was on the Legislation Advisory Committee for the preparation of the January 1992-1993 law to protect competition. In 1996, he became chair of the Department of Economics and Economic Politics at Marmara University, and in addition, began writing a column in the newspaper Radikal. From 2001 to 2005, he was vice dean at Istanbul Bilgi University. Katırcıoğlu, who has been chair of the Department of Economics at Bilgi University since 2005, has published a number of comparative studies on Turkey's manufacturing industry.
