The Person You Have Called Cannot Be Reached at the Moment:
Representations of Lifestyles in Turkey, 1980-2005

In this exhibition, we have focused on a time span from the 80s to our day. Recent history is fascinating; though, having shaped a large part of your life it seems very familiar, it also represents history on a much broader scale. Furthermore, the decades after 1980 belong to a period that merged tremendous repression with new possibilities. When you look at the well-known icons of the recent past from a different perspective, they suddenly seem unfamiliar and you discover entirely different correlations and meanings. You thus begin to discern the past and the present in today as well. I believe that close interaction with people from post-1980 generations – teamwork with our university student assistants on this project, for instance – has generated this awareness.
