Film at the OttomanBank Museum: "Of Countries and the World"

The Ottoman Bank Museum Theater is showing the Turkish documentary Hangi Kıbrıs [Which Cyprus] under the theme "Of Countries and the World." The film focuses on the difficulties and expectations of the Greek and Turkish populations, which the war in Cyprus has turned into enemies. Following the screening scheduled for Thursday, April 27, at 7:00 p.m., Rüstem Batum, the director of the film, conducts a discussion entitled, "Union despite Differences."

The border between north and south Cyprus dividing Turks and Greeks opened on April 23, 2003. Thousands of people surged across the frontiers to visit the homes and villages that had been off limits to them for nearly 30 years. "Which Cyprus" tells the joys and sorrows of old friends reunited after 30 years apart. Through interviews conducted with politicians, intellectuals, members of the media, peace activists and people from various sectors of both Turkish and Greek populations, the film addresses the possibility of reunification and the healing of old wounds. By exposing the desire that people have for peace and the efforts made in that direction, "Which Cyprus" offers a beacon of hope to other problem areas in the world.

The Museum's film program is prepared in collaboration with the Documentary Filmmakers Association (BSB) and offers a film, complemented by a discussion, on a different theme every week. Screenings are held free of charge. Please call (0212) 334 22 70 to make reservations.

Documentary Filmmakers Association (BSB) started out as a civil platform and began its structuring process following the National Conference held in March 1997. Today it continues its activities as an association with professional status, certified by the Ministry of Culture. Starting with Istanbul, Ankara, Eskisehir and Izmir, BSB is in contact with documentary filmmakers throughout Turkey. Convinced that civil culture is crucial in designing better social futures and filling the blanks of collective social memory, the Documentary Filmmakers Association considers these functions complementary to the creative aspect of documentary filmmaking. BSB creates and promotes screening spaces other than television, organizes and participates in film festivals all over Turkey and offers film screenings with discussions, especially in universities.
