At the Ottoman Bank Museum Eyüp Potters:
From 15th Century Istanbul to the Present
Prof. Filiz Yenisehirlioglu, Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Design and Architecture at Baskent University, will be our guest speaker at Objects and Rituals this month, with a presentation titled, "Eyüp Potters: From 15th Century Istanbul to the Present," scheduled for Wednesday, January 25, at 6:30 p.m. Drawing on the results of surveys carried out in the district, research conducted in museums both in Turkey and abroad, and historical evidence, Prof. Filiz Yenisehirlioglu will present the Eyüp pottery tradition and discuss how it was kept alive for so many years.
"For centuries, the earthenware necessary for every day use in Istanbul was produced in Eyüp," explains Yenisehirlioglu. "All the objects essential to the population of Istanbul, including items as diverse as the plates and cups used in soup kitchens, the special earthenware made for the palace, water jugs used in cemeteries, earthen flowerpots for garden usage, containers to store dry grain, and large water jars, were produced by Eyüp potters who were able to continually meet changing demand by adapting their ware to different functions."
