The Requiem in the History of Western Music
Music Talks at the Ottoman Bank Museum

The Voyvoda Street Lectures host musicologist İlke Boran at Music Talks this month. The lecture titled, “The Requiem in the History of Western Music,” retraces the fascinating saga of the requiem mass from the early Renaissance to the 21st century and is scheduled for Wednesday, October 18, at 6:30 p.m. Following the talk, pianist Burcu Aktaş, recipient of the first Brookshire Award for musicology given in the US, will perform works by Beethoven and Chopin.

“Throughout the ages, music has been a central component of rituals in every culture,” says Boran. “Music has always accompanied ritual and formed an essential part of it. In the history of western music, the Requiem mass honoring the dead figures among the most impressive rituals and has, since the 1400s, been a focal point of interest to composers who have interpreted it in varied musical styles.”

İlke Boran

İlke Boran was born in 1972 in Rome. He started primary school in 1978, at the Ecole Chernovise in Paris. After three years in Paris, he returned to Turkey in 1981 and continued his schooling there. While attending the French Lycée Charles de Gaulle in Ankara, he also began to take private piano lessons.  In 1992, he enrolled in the Department of Musicology of the State Conservatory at Istanbul Mimar Sinan University. After obtaining a BA in musicology in 1996, he continued his studies in the master’s program of the same department. Boran, who started teaching Music History at the State Conservatory of Mimar Sinan University in 1998, completed his master’s program in musicology in July 1999 under the supervision of Prof. Filiz Ali. The same year, he was accepted as researcher in the Department of Musicology and has pursued a doctoral program in the same department since 2000.
