Republican Turkey and Liberalism

The focus this season, in the Making of Modern Turkey Seminars, is on the various “isms” that left their mark on the first half of the 20th century and on their positive or negative impact on Republican Turkey. This month’s seminar, scheduled for Saturday, February 18, at 2:30 p.m., hosts Prof. Fuat Keyman with a presentation on liberalism. Focusing on the latest debates on contemporary liberalism, he examines the ways in which liberalism can promote a lasting modernization and democratization process in Turkey.

“Modern Turkish history contains a major political dichotomy,” says Keyman. “On the one hand, it tells the success story of modernization and the passage to democracy, on the other, it relates the still ongoing failure in achieving durable modernization and democratization in both the relationship between the state and the individual or society, and in the relations among different social groups. Although liberalism is a key concept in understanding and solving this dichotomy, in Turkey it remains a seldom discussed political theory and a form of social administration.”

Prof. Fuat Keyman

Prof. Keyman is a member of the faculty in the Department of International Relations at Koç University and conducts research on democratization, globalization, international relations and the state-society relationship in Turkey. He has published a number of articles and books both in Turkey and abroad including Türkiye ve Radikal Demokrasi (“Turkey and Radical Democracy”) (Alfa, Istanbul,2001), Türkiye’de Devlet Sorunu: Küreselleşme, Modernleşme, Demokratikleşme (“The State Problem in Turkey: Globalization,Modernization, Democratization”) (Bilgi ÜniversitesiYayınları, Istanbul, 2005) and Remaking Turkey: Globalization, Alternative Modernities and Democracy (Oxford: Lexington Books, forthcoming in 2006).
