Republican Turkey and Marxism
The Making of Modern Turkey Seminars, which focus this season on the various “isms” that emerged in the first half of the 20th century, host Prof. Mete Tuncay on Saturday, April 15, at 2:30 p.m. with a presentation on Marxism and its impact on Republican Turkey.
“The form of Marxism best known in Turkey is Marxism-Leninism and anti-imperialism,” says Tunçay. “During the National Struggle, there was an attempt to reconcile this ideology with Islam but with the secularist policies of subsequent years, this effort was abandoned. Marxism agrees with most of the revolutionary Kemalist reforms undertaken to modernize the country. Although cordial relations with the USSR until World War II limited the Marxist opposition movement, it remained subversively positioned within the socio-political sphere. It was only after 1960 that Turkey actually encountered Marxist socialism.”
Prof. Mete Tunçay Tuncay was born in Istanbul in 1936. After graduating from the Faculty of Political Sciences at Ankara University, he obtained his Ph.D. in 1961. As the recipient of a Rockefeller Grant, he conducted research in the London School of Economics and Political Science between 1961 and 1963. Tunçay became an associate professor in political theories in 1965. In 1979, he was a guest academic at the Soviet Academy of Sciences in Moscow, Leningrad and Baku. From 1979 to 1980, he used his Fulbright Grant to conduct research in Stanford University. He was in the university of Berlin from 1987 to 88. He is the author of Türkiye’de Sol Akımlar 1908-25 [Leftist Movements in Turkey 1908-25], published in 1967 and of TC’de Tek-Parti Yönetiminin Kurulması 1923-31 [The Establishment of Single-Party Rule in Turkey 1923-31] published in 1981. He was editor of the monthly magazine Tarih ve Toplum [History and Society] from 1984 to 83, and of the periodical Toplumsal Tarih [Social History] from 1994 to 96, and is currently Chair of the Department of History at Istanbul Bilgi University.
