"The Evolution of the Ottoman Residence and Galata Apartment Houses"

This month, the Voyvoda Street Istanbul Lectures are hosting Assist. Prof. Derin Öncel with a talk on the Evolution of the Ottoman Residence and Galata Apartment Houses, in which she outlines the main headings of a research conducted on late 19th century apartment buildings in the Beyoğlu district. The lecture will be held, free of charge, on Wednesday, March 8, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The research Derin Öncel will present is a typological study, limited to a sample of buildings in the area surrounding the Galata tower. The proposed sample was considered  representative because it included apartment houses of diverse architectural design which, on an urban scale,  also possessed a number of distinctive characteristics. To investigate structural consistency, the study, rather than remain confined to a schematic approach, viewed the emergence of this "new type of residence" from various perspectives, taking into consideration the urban texture, morphological aspect and parcellation of the area prior to the shift to apartment houses, the social changes experienced by the population due to urbanization, and the effects of the passage from a traditional to a more modern lifestyle.

Assist. Prof. Derin Öncel Derin Öncel was born in 1965 in Istanbul. After earning a BA in architecture from Mimar Sinan University, in 1989, she obtained an MA, in 1992, from the same university and began working as a post-graduate researcher in the Department of Architecture. In 1995, she received a scholarship from the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) to pursue her Ph.D. studies in France, where she completed her doctoral dissertation at the University of Paris 8 Saint Denis, in 2002. She is currently a faculty member in the Department of Architecture at Mimar Sinan University and teaches space planning and design.
