Istanbul and the Fossatis
The Voyvoda Street Istanbul Lectures will be hosting Assoc. Prof. Cengiz Can this month with a presentation entitled "Istanbul and the Fossatis." The lecture will be held, free of charge, at the Museum, on Wednesday, February 8, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Reservations must be made.
When the Fossati brothers arrived in Istanbul in the middle of the 19th century, the city still retained its traditional structure. This lecture addresses the Fossatis' approach to Istanbul's urban and architectural values and their responsiveness to its local culture. Drawing on original drafts and documents from the Ticino state archives, Cengiz Can will also examine how the desire for change and the determination to emulate a European model affected Istanbul's architecture during the Tanzimat, and the dilemma this created for architects of the period.

Cengiz Can attended the Istanbul Italian high school, and then studied architecture at İDMMA. He followed this up with graduate work in the Department of Restoration at Yıldız Technical University and obtained his Ph.D. in 1993, with a doctoral dissertation entitled, İstanbul'da 19. Yüzyıl Batılı ve Levanten Mimarların Yapıları ve Koruma Sorunları (The Constructions and the Preservation Issues of 19th Century Western and Levantine Architects in Istanbul). In 1975, he held a fellowship at the University of Bologna and from 1986 to1987, he was awarded a grant from the Italian Foreign Ministry for further research in the Department of Restoration and History of Architecture and the Centro Studi e Documentazione Della Cultura Armena at the Technical University of Milan. In 2001, he received a research grant from the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation. Can, who has published works on 19th century architecture, architectural restoration and urban preservation, is currently a faculty member in the Department of Restoration at Yıldız Technical University. |
