"Arna's Children"
Film at the Ottoman Bank Museum

The Museum's movie theater is showing the Palestinian documentary Arna's Children on Thursday, December 7, at 7:00 p.m. Directed by Juliano Mer Khamis and Danniel Danniel, the film moves back and forth in time to expose the tragedy and fear experienced by Palestinian children whose lives have been trapped by war and the Israeli occupation. Following the screening, researcher and writer Faik Bulut conducts a discussion entitled, The Human Factor: Caught between Palestine and Israel.

The documentary tells the story of the theater group founded by Arna Mer Khamis. Of Jewish origins, she married a Palestinian Arab, Saliba Khamis, in the 1950s, and founded an alternative education system for Palestinian children whose lives had been disrupted by Israeli occupation. The theater group became a medium for these children to deal with their anger, anxiety, pain, and fear. Between 1989 and 1996, Juliano, the director of the documentary and Arna's son, filmed the children in the theater group as they rehearsed and performed.

The Museum's film program is prepared in collaboration with the Documentary Filmmakers Association (BSB) and offers a film, complemented by a discussion, on a different theme every week. Screenings are held free of charge. Please call (0212) 334 22 70 to make reservations.

Faik Bulut
Born in 1950, Faik Bulut started a career as a journalist in the 1980s, but abandoned journalism in 1996 to continue solely as a researcher and writer. Throughout the 1970s, he sojourned in the Middle East, and after learning Arabic, undertook field work on the history, culture, religions and politics of Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Israel. He has written more than ten books that deal with Arab-Islamic history, Islamic organizations and in particular, with the Palestine issue. His historical articles and daily issues stories have appeared in a number of publications in Turkey. In addition, he has participated as an "expert on the Middle East" in panel discussions and programs held on both local and foreign television channels. Bulut, who knows Arabic, English, French and Farsi, often travels abroad and takes part in socio-cultural and socio-political activities.

Documentary Filmmakers Association (BSB) started out as a civil platform and began its structuring process following the National Conference held in March 1997. Today it continues its activities as an association with professional status, certified by the Ministry of Culture. Starting with Istanbul, Ankara, Eskisehir and Izmir, BSB is in contact with documentary filmmakers throughout Turkey. Convinced that civil culture is crucial in designing better social futures and filling the blanks of collective social memory, the Documentary Filmmakers Association considers these functions complementary to the creative aspect of documentary filmmaking. BSB creates and promotes screening spaces other than television, organizes and participates in film festivals all over Turkey and offers film screenings with discussions, especially in universities.
