Future of the EU and Turkey, Prof.Dr.Emre Gönensay
The Voyvoda Street Economic History Lectures host Prof. Emre Gönensay this month with
a presentation on the Future of the EU and Turkey, in which he will address the difficulties the
EU faces and how these may affect Turkey. The lecture is scheduled for Wednesday, April 5, at 6:30 p.m.
In his talk, Prof. Gönensay will attempt to get to the roots of the issues the EU faces and identify their causes. At the same time, he will explain how the crises experienced by the EU could affect Turkey’s accession negotiations in the long run.
Prof. Emre Gönensay
Emre Gönensay was born in 1937 in Istanbul. He obtained his Ph.D. in economics from the London School of Economics in 1967 and from 1971 to 1992, taught in the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences at Boğaziçi University. During that period, he also held executive posts in a number of social and political institutions and foundations. In addition, he has held board executive
positions in leading Turkish banks and corporations and served on the board of consultants for TÜSİAD. In 1996, he was made prime minister then left politics in 1999. He has written economic columns for various newspapers and published numerous works on the Turkish economy. Gönensay currently teaches in the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences at Işık University and since 2003, is Turkey’s honorary ambassador to the EU.
