Ömer Madra joins us at the Voyvoda Street Political Economy lectures this month with a talk on "The Environment and Us."  The lecture, which focuses on global environmental issues, will be held at the Ottoman Bank Museum on Wednesday, October 4, at 6:30 p.m.

 "We should be seriously concerned with such topics as the general situation of humanity, its well-being and the safeguarding of human rights," says Ömer Madra. "Which areas we give priority to is doubtless subjective but there are at least three unavoidable issues that call for immediate attention if we want to secure an acceptable future, or simply 'keep existing.' Naturally, first – and maybe foremost – comes impending environmental catastrophe. There is wide international scientific consensus that the global environment crisis (global warming) is getting out of hand and has very nearly reached a point of no return."

This season, as part of the Voyvoda Street Lectures program, talks on the theme, "Preparing Turkey for the New World Order," will be held on the first Wednesday of every month, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Ömer Madra Ömer Madra was born in 1945 in Istanbul. After graduating from the Faculty of Political Science at Ankara University in 1968, he taught international law in the same faculty from 1970 to 1982. Between 1982 and 1994, he wrote columns, and served as both editor and journalist for the daily Milliyet, and the magazines, Şehir, Gergedan, Playboy, Start, and Arredamento/Dekorasyon. In 1990, he became publishing director and columnist for the Sunday supplement of the daily Güneş. From 1999 to 2000, he wrote a column for the daily Yeni Binyıl and from 2004 to 2005, one for the daily Birgün. Since 2000, he has published close to 500 articles on acikradyo.com.tr, under the heading Kâinatın Tefrikası ("Chronicles of the Universe"). Madra is a founding member and the production director of Açık Radyo for which he has produced programs since 1995. He is currently, and has been since 1996, a faculty member in the Department of International Relations at Bilgi University.
