At the Ottoman Bank Museum:
Past, Present and Future in Turkey-Europe Relationship
The Voyvoda Street Economic History Lectures is hosting a talk by Prof. Beril Dedeoglu, Chair of the Department of International Relations at Galatasaray University, on the topic, "Past, Present and Future in Turkey-Europe Relationship." The lecture will be held at the Museum, free of charge, on Wednesday, February 1, at 6:30 p.m.
Explaining that the Turkey-Eu relationship has only recently reached the point where it can be considered a partnership, Dedeoglu said the following: "From World War II on, the policies adopted by each side were usually defined within a foreign policy framework; Europe saw in Turkey an ally in the Middle East while Turkey accepted Europe as one of the two "Wests." Diplomatic and political relations between the two sides developed as an extension of this viewpoint with the concept of "security" at the core of diplomatic relations. Globalization has brought about changes in the attitudes of both Turkey and the EU so that Turkey has now reached a stage where it prepares for EU membership but accession negotiations depend on both sides giving up earlier political paradigms."
Prof. Beril Dedeoglu was born in 1961 in Ankara and holds an MA and Ph.D. in International Relations from Istanbul University. She began her academic career in that university, where she also completed her Ph.D. research on the European Union in 1993. In 1995, she joined the Department of International Relations at Galatasaray University, became associate professor in 1999 and full professor in 2005, and has served as chair of said department since 2000. Beril Dedeoglu teaches EU Security and Defense Policies and EU Unification Models, and is one of the writers for Faruk Sönmezoğlu’s "International Relations Dictionary." She has a number of books and articles in print both in Turkey and abroad including, Adım Adım Avrupa Birliği (All About The EU), Ortadoğu Üzerine Notlar (Notes on the Middle East), and Uluslararası Güvenlik ve Strateji (International Security and Strategy)
